Collection: Specialize in Polar and Metaphysics We have been visiting this bookstore for 10 years or more, and it's very good. A great collection, always new treasures to find; very helpful staff, and of course you're in Ashland...what more could you ask? Shakespeare & Co. is right across the street as well. |

This is a very good bookstore for a small town; they sell paperbacks and CDs
as well as hardbacks, but their collection is definitely worth stopping for. The
store really is bigger than it looks! Otter's wonderful truck, Red Sonja is parked in front of the store... |

When they say City of Books, they aren't kidding. Is there anyone who still doesn't know about Powell's? The store covers a complete city block in Portland; there are 8 huge rooms of books, and they hand you a map at the door. Don't think (like I did at first) that you can find your way around without it, just accept it humbly and be grateful... Powells carries new and used, interfiled, and a whole lot of each. One of the few stores I've seen where all the shelves are well marked as to their content and sections are always easy to find (with a map, of course!) They didn't seem to have a lot of really old stuff, except in their very pricey Rare Book Room; their main strength seemed to be books that were printed in...oh, maybe the last 30 years, and have gone out of print. I found a lot of those. Very good prices, and a lot of other things than books- gift wrap, cards, magnets, all that stuff. They also have 6 satellite stores around the Portland area. There was a good article in the LA Times about Michael Powell and the bookstore; it appeared in the issue dated Friday, August 7, 1998, Part A of the Home edition. They charge $1.50 for viewing full text or downloading; otherwise I would have just linked to it! |

A nice stop while driving along Oregon's beautiful coast...especially if it's
raining, which it often is. The whimsical artwork does not mislead those in search
of excellent used books. Robert's has a lot of wonderful books in many different
subject areas; it's well worth taking a look. Good prices, too!
