This is a description of how to make the simplest and most common type of granny square; there are lots of variants around, too.
Chain 4. Slip stitch through the first chain to make a ring.
Chain 3, double crochet 2 through the center of the ring, chain 2. [double crochet 3, chain 2] three times. The chain 3 will always be counted as the first double crochet of the first set on each new row.
This will give you four groups of three double crochet, and four chain 2 spaces. Link the last chain 2 onto the top chain of the chain 3 you did at the start of this row.
Chain 3, turn. Do 2 double crochet in the space beside the chain 3 space (working to the left), chain 2, do 3 double crochet in the same space. That's a corner.
Chain 1.
Repeat the corner: 3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC in the next chain 2 space.
Chain 1, repeat the corner in the next chain 2 space.
Chain 1, repeat the corner in the next chain 2 space.
Chain 1, slip stitch it into the top of the chain 3 that started this row.
Okay, and that's the pattern. Along the sides, do 3 DC in every chain 1 space, and chain 1 between the DCs when you're not going around a corner. Corners are 3 DC, chain 2, 3 Dcs in the same chain2 space.
Every row will get bigger, and after the third row it'll be square. Which is why they call it a granny square, even if your granny didn't make it.
