Three girls are in school together, and we get to see what happens to their lives when they grow up.
And two of the three girls are a very young Bette Davis and Mr. Otter's Golden Love Object Joan Blondell. Oh, and Humphrey Bogart is one of their childhood friends too...talk about a good cast! But this was also a good movie. The kids are shown as kids, where many character traits come out; as adults, Blondell ends up in Juvie (not surprising); Ann Dvorak is the socialite who marries a man and then falls in love with another; and Bette Davis is the sturdy dependable secretary. This is pre-Code, so Dvorak actually leaves her husband for an alcohol-and-drug-fueled sojourn with another man, pretty hot stuff at the time. She even abandons her young son although later her gangster friends (Bogie among them) kidnap him and bring him back to her. A pretty good and satisfying movie, with interesting characters and situations and a satisfying ending for everyone but the socialite mother and Bette Davis, who ends up taking care of the kid. |
