Another of Michael Moore's documentaries, this
one about 9/11 and the war in
Iraq. Moore's chronicling of Bush's lack of preparedness for the terrorist attacks, and his dropping of the ball afterwards, then the sudden shifting of the national focus to Iraq is being called a left wing diatribe, skewed, one-sided and inflammatory...and it is. It's also a brilliant recapping of the events of the time, and something everyone should see even if they think Moore is a nutter and a liar. Because this is exactly what the people of this nation need to be talking and thinking about, especially in this election year. When you read about people's reactions to this movie, mostly what they talk about is what they DIDN'T know...and there's a whole lot of stuff that people just didn't notice sliding by at the time...like why exactly did we attack Iraq when the terrorists were connected to Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia? and look there, the Bush family just happens to be best friends with high-ranking Saudis, imagine that... and more besides. Yes, Moore has deliberately cut the footage he uses in this film to make Bush look stupid (although that's not hard to do)...but it's still not far off the mark. Same for the rest of this movie: yes, the facts are presented in such a way as to be sensational...but they're still facts. I was pleased that this movie is less played for laughs than Bowling for Columbine...making jokes would not have been appropriate for this subject. In fact, although Moore is the narrator, he is rarely on camera. The recap of the events of 9/11 is restrained and respectful, as are the segments on the soldiers in Iraq. No, you don't have to agree with him. But go see it and then tell me where he's wrong and what you think about the movie...we'll have a nice discussion.
