Bob Fosse wrote and directed this
semi-autobiographical gem about a
dancer/choreographer going down the spiral of
sex, drugs and alcohol.
Roy Schieder is really good in this, one of his best roles, even though he isn't a dancer or singer...but that doesn't really matter, since he is directing most of the dance numbers rather than in them. Jessica Lange is also good (but isn't she always?), a real charmer. There are several excellent numbers, especially the Fly Me scene, and the boffo ending...unlike most musicals, though, the plot isn't just a vehicle to take you from song to song...good writing, good acting...brilliant is an appropriate word for this. Touching. Funny. Maddening. Like a really huge train wreck, you know what's coming but you can't look away. Watch this one with Chicago, a nice double feature. |
