Second movie in the phenomenally awful Planet
of the Apes series. A
second astronaut is sent after Taylor to find
out what happened to him...and
they find a whole new civilization under the
surface of the planet, complete
with 'doomsday' bomb.
Oh, man, did this suck! And the worst is yet to come...Mr. Otter and I are watching the whole series one by one...stay tuned. OK, James Franciscus is cute, a little skinny to be a serious honey, but easy on the eye (except the BLINDING teeth, oh man!). No huge plot holes (given that they would send a second astronaut in the first place, and manage to get him to the right place at the right time). It's pretty straightforward with some nice (if predictable) special effects. The ending is good, probably a big surprise to audiences back then (Oh my god! They DID IT!) and meant to A) be MEANINGFUL and B) preclude the possibility of more sequels...you can tell how well that worked... Imponderable: if the mutants all look alike under their masks, and there are (evidently) no black people left on earth, why does the 'hit man' mutant have a black face mask? Seventies sensibilities taken to the point of nonsensicality... |
