Elle returns, ready to take on Congress for
the sake of her beloved dog
Bruiser...
OK, sequels suck, and I won't belabor this point any more (see review of Matrix Revolutions if you want the diatribe). Still, I needed a flick to take to the Red Cross for a morning of apheresis, and when I went to the video store, I was confronted by a terrible sight...row after row of movies I HAD ALREADY SEEN!...or had no wish ever to see*. Again, given a choice between this and About A Boy, I picked this. And you know, I wasn't sorry I did...amazing but true. Granted, it isn't as wonderful as the first one, but given that, this is an amusing couple of hours entertainment...knowing that they were not going to be able to recreate the phenomenon of the first movie, they didn't try. Elle is as perky and cute as ever, but everything else goes way over the top in a very playful and fun way...there are some funny scenes and some good supporting actors, including Sally Field, Jennifer Coolidge from Christopher Guest's wonderful parodies, and (surprise!) Robert Newhart as the doorman, still quite funny in his wierd low-key way. Do see Legally Blonde first, it's really good, but there's no need to avoid this one either.
*A good description of hell: stuck in a
chair, unable to bend your arms
because you have needles in them, and you're
forced to watch ADAM SANDLER
movies. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
