What's Otter's
rating system?
Bruce has a run of bad luck and blames God. God is not amused. Bruce is given all of God's powers, and of course things go from bad to worse, then get straightened out in the end.

OK, just shoot me. An Adam Sandler movie AND a Jim Carrey movie within a week of each other? PUH-LEEZ. What was I thinking?

And yet. The previews of this had looked ok, not too much mugging from the rubber-faced and often unfunny Mr. Carrey...and Morgan Freeman, total honey, playing God...pretty enticing.

So I bit the bullet, and got it from Netflix. And, wonder of wonders, the night I sat down to watch it (and offered to watch it on my laptop so as not to offend Mr. Otter's sensibilities) he said he'd watch it with me.

And we were both very very pleasantly surprised.

Jim Carrey is not as far removed from his hyuck-hyuck funnyman persona in this movie as in The Truman Show, but here he is at least toned down a bit. Jennifer Aniston is adorable as his exasperated girlfriend, and Morgan Freeman, well, it's a hard choice between him and Alanis Morissette as God, but he's damn good.

And this is really really funny. There was one scene that had me and Mr. Otter actually howling with laughter...and many other good scenes interspersed, mostly having to do with Bruce's (mis) use of the power of God. Very nice.

Not for those who have no sense of humor about religion, but a darn amusing movie.
