Hm. Well. This is kind of an odd duck...I mean, I really really loved it when it came out, thought it was really cutting edge and fun and wierd in the right ways...and now, it's kind of, well, showing its age would be the kind way to put it.

On the good side: it's very funny, in many ways. And the idea of creating this whole character/band/group who already have a worldwide reputation and fan club, of which this movie is just a segment, was really cool. Many of the costumes are great, and the special effects, while cheesy, were fun. Plus they've cleaned it up a lot for the dvd; I remember much of the film being so dark that it was hard to tell what was happening...but even so, I totally couldn't find the scene where the aliens were barbecuing twinkies, hope it wasn't cut.

And the quotes, things I still say: "So what? Big deal." "Three brained monkeyboy" and of course, "No matter where you go...there you are." And more. They will live on when this movie has been forgotten.

On the other hand, it's slow moving, dated and seems a little silly now, doesn't it? kind of like the old Star Trek shows, you can remember that it was cool at the time, but now it's just campy. At least Buckaroo Banzai doesn't have William Shatner chewing scenery in every episode...!

Speaking of cast, wow! Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and many others, amazing to find them all together in something like this.

This is a piece of pop culture you probably shouldn't miss, but don't spend bucks for it unless you've already seen it and love it...
