Casanova discovers his true love and attempts to win her.
Okay, let me just start off by saying (even though it doesn't happen in this version of his life) that Casanova was a LIBRARIAN. Like most men in the profession, he started this career later in life...nevertheless, it's excellent PR. When this movie was over, Mr. Otter and I turned to each other with huge smiles on our faces and both said the same word: Charming. A perfect description of this movie. Really, it's a romantic farce: in trying to win the woman he falls in love with, Casanova (played very well and handsomely by Heath Ledger) ends up in a chain of mistaken identities and people falling in love with the wrong people and the Inquisition trying to nail Casanova and (of course) it all sorts itself out in the end. All the actors here are good, and good for their roles. Jeremy Irons as the evil Inquisitor was a treat, he got the mix of menacing but slightly funny just right. Oh, and it was wonderful to see Tim McInerny in a movie again, haven't run across him in a while. The writing is good, even (dare I say?) witty. The settings and costumes are beautiful, and the ending is satisfying. A real winner! and oddly enough, even for the last (10 pm) show on a weeknight, we were THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE THEATRE. That was wierd but a lot of fun. This will be good on video as well as in the theatre, so add it to your rental list and prepare to be charmed. Because it is. Charming. |
