From the novel of the same name by Joanne
Harris
An eccentric woman and her daughter come to a town and loosen up the inhabitants. Two serious honeys: Carrie-Ann Moss and Johnny Depp. Who cares about the plot? Actually, Moss isn't such a honey in this, although she does turn into a better person by the end...but Depp is gorgeous, esp. with his nicely done Irish accent. This movie, like the chocolates of the title, is relentlessly sweet...very enjoyable, but a little goes a long way. It's made in the mold of all the other movies about people who are different who make those around them learn to value that difference and loosen up. Read The Big Orange Splot by Pinkwater, for gosh sakes, it's the same story. Oh, sorry, no, the picture book doesn't have Johnny Depp in it... So. Anyway. Yes, this is charming...and given that it's obvious from the beginning that all will turn out well, it's fun to watch it all happen. I have to say though, the best scene is near the end, the bit with the daughter's imaginary playmate...very nice. Watch it when you need a dose of sweets or feel like a chick flick or if your Johnny Depp meter is running low. |
