From the book The Killer Department by Robert Cullen
This is based on a true story, about a medical examiner/forensics doctor in Soviet Russia who is put in charge of the manhunt for a serial killer. Stephen Rea plays the detective, and Donald Sutherland is the military officer that is on the government board that oversees the investigation. Both of them are excellent in this, and most of the movie is about their relationship. Oh, and Max von Sydow plays the psychiatrist, very charming. You know who the killer is right away, it's not a secret. The killings are shown, although not too graphically, but the real fascination here is the dealings with the Soviet bureaucracy, which are intricate and amazingly awful, to American sensibilities. A good solid story, well done. Worth seeing. |
