A very interesting premise...William H. Macy
is a 'cooler', a man hired by
a Vegas casino owner (Alec Baldwin) to walk
around the floor, stopping by
any table where someone is having a big run
of luck...because by his very
presence, Macy will cool their luck and
they'll start losing. But then Macy
falls in love, and (as usual) everything
changes...
Macy is such a joy to watch. He goes from the perpetual loser, lost in his own hell of despondency and loneliness, to glowing happiness and back again...completely believeable, he is Everyman, and the viewer immediately identifies with him (even in a movie like Fargo, where you think he's an idiot and totally hate him for what he's doing, you still recognize him...everyone knows someone like that...) Alec Baldwin is good as the scummy heartless casino owner, and Maria Bello is very engaging as the woman he falls in love with. And don't miss Doc Watson as the lounge singer, great cameo. This is definitely one to see...a violent, but fascinating look at the not-so-pretty side of Vegas. |
