Oh, there's some kind of plot about Burt Lancaster's pirate ship being conned into helping some
freedom fighters get out from under the thumb of the local bad ruler, but who paid attention?
This was the fifth movie in our New Year's Day Videofest (theme: Pirates) and about halfway through it I looked at Mr. Otter (who had seen it in the theater because he's OLD) and said, they made this silly on purpose, right? it's supposed to be ridiculous? Because with some of these movies from the 50s, you can tell that they made them kind of seriously and they just turned out to be idiotic, but were not meant to be. Yes, he said, it was silly at the time and people knew it. They really did have a sense of humor back then, you know... But not a sense of clothing design, this is one of the more badly (in an outrageous, clashing, stupid-looking clothes sense) costumed pirate epics ever made. Especially the guy with the gold shorts, omg how hideous. But still. Don't buy this one, it's not an enduring classic, but rent it and enjoy it. Because this is silliness, pure and simple. And not bad silliness, for all that. Colorful, brash, fun to watch, lots of visual jokes, good action, a lot of bang for your three bucks. |
