Dr. Horrible makes plans for world domination...but there's this girl he really likes, too...

No, this isn't a movie, but hey, it's my review site, so deal.

This was kind of an internet phenomenon, for any of you who missed it. During the writers' strike of 2007, Joss Whedon (may his tribe increase) was trying to think of something he could work on without crossing picket lines. "Hey, kids, let's put on a musical on the INTERNET!" he said to his buddies, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was born.

It was released on the internet in three parts in the summer of 2008, and then on DVD at the end of 2008. And it is so worth the 11 bucks it costs to order it online!

Firstly, the cast: Neal Patrick Harris (who is forever known as that brain guy from Starship Troopers), who is even more adorable when he is trying to be evil, and who can actually sing. Felicia Day, whom I have never seen but was excellent in this, and also Nathan Fillion, aka Captain Mal from Firefly. And a bunch of other good folks, but these three are the main actors.

And did I mention that it's a musical? and a damn good one too, excellent songs that stick nicely in your head and sound good there. A great plot, decent special effects for a low-budget production (Captain Hammer's uniform is big gloves and a tshirt with a hammer on it) and a whole lot of wit and good writing.

But wait! that's not all! on the dvd is a commentary track called Commentary: The Musical. It has everyone involved in the production singing about, well, themselves mostly. It's hilarious. And still more! since one of Dr. Horrible's goals is to join the Evil League of Evil, Whedon encouraged fans to send in their own musical video applications, and about 8 of the best are here, and they are SCREAMINGLY funny.

Seriously, I took this on a visit and watched it three times, three nights in a row (with Ottersis, with Spider Jerusalem, and with the Barracuda and the Dog Master), and was still laughing the third time through.

Now THAT'S a good show. Get it, love it, pass it around. Word is a sequel is coming, and it can't come soon enough for this otter.
