An amazing documentary, showing the spread of
the Rom (Gypsies) and
their music from India, through Egypt,
Turkey, Romania, Hungary,
Germany, France and Spain (and other
countries I can't remember at the
moment).
There is no plot, per se...the whole movie is
of one group of people
after another, singing, dancing, playing
instruments, traveling...the
songs are all in the language of the people,
with English subtitles (in
the version I saw), just enough to let you
know what the song is about
without translating the whole thing.
The continuity of the music and dance, the
people, the costume, the
locations, the camera work and the
connections made from one group to
the next combine to make this a visually
stunning movie...true, there is
no real plot, but anyone who is interested in
music or dance will find
this movie fascinating...well worth seeing,
even though it's only on
video.
