Still another remake of "The Front Page"
by Ben Hecht and Charles
MacArthur.
And yet...this had a lot of charm. I had an apheresis appointment, didn't have time to go to the video store, so while working I picked up two videos...it was a choice between this and Runaway Bride with <retch> Julia Roberts and Richard Gere </retch>...that video had gone out over 400 times, while His Girl Friday had only gone out about 225 times...I decided to go with the one that was less likely to break in the middle, since once the needles are in my arms, I'm a captive audience. Anyway. As soon as it started, I remembered why I had never seen this...I've seen The Front Page just a few too many times, in many different formats...been there, done that. But having said all that, I have to say, this was way charming. Roz Russell (total honey, you betcha) and Cary Grant are excellent together, spitting funny lines and invective back and forth with a verve worthy of Nick and Nora Charles. There's a lot of action, and even though the story is rewritten to make the retiring (male) reporter a woman who has divorced the owner of the newpaper instead, it's done very well. Charming, funny, wonderful. This otter laughed a lot. |
