A bunch of hack actors from a show very much like the original Star Trek are captured by aliens.

Yes, I am old enough to remember the original Star Trek from 66-68...granted, I was young enough that staying up til 10 pm to see the third season on Friday nights was a big deal, but still...I've always had a soft spot in my heart for it.

And I've been to a science fiction convention. (I enjoyed it, but one was enough, really. And one Mythopoeic convention, the big high fantasy convention. One was enough there too...)

Anyway. What I mean here is, been there, done that, wore the FIJAGH tshirt, had the phaser and the figurines and the models.

And I really love this movie, because obviously, everyone who had anything to do with it has been and done the same stuff...and loves it all. And it shows.

The fubsy tv series, the aliens who just DON'T get it, the hack actors who really can't stand each other, the lead actor grandstanding over the others, the convention full of people who just don't have lives...it's all perfect, and perfectly written. And if I try to babble more about any of it, I'll give away lovely, perfectly built-up plot points, and I don't want to do that.

Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver (blonde, omg!), Tony Shalhoub, Alan Rickman, and a bunch of other wonderful people, and a whole lot of aliens that strongly remind me of a good friend of mine in their human forms...this one's a winner, if you haven't seen it get it at once...and if you have, well, might be time to watch it again.
