From the play Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo.

Often when you ask Mr. Otter what a movie is about, he'll tell you it's a remake of The Shop Around the Corner. Because it's been remade so many times. Imagine our surprise when this REALLY DID turn out to be a remake of Shop Around the Corner! with songs, of course.

Judy Garland and Van Johnson are both employees at a music store in turn-of-the-century Chicago. They are acrimonious, but each has a secret pen pal to whom letters are written...and of course they end up finding out that they are writing to each other, and fall in love.

Silly and ephemeral, none of the songs are really memorable, but genial as well. 'Cuddles' Sokoll plays the music store owner, and Spring Byington is his love interest (and they are often more interesting than Van and Judy). Buster Keaton is in this, and is just plain annoying.

Mildly entertaining, a decent but not outstanding musical.
