Hey, Community Theatre People! Let's put on a (really awful) show!
This is another of Christopher Guest's amazingly insightful and brilliant parodies of a slice of American life...and it's even more amazing that he can get it so right, since he's British. This look at the oddball personalities that make up a community theatre group, including their dreams of making it to Broadway when the producer who has promised to come to their show sees it, is perfect in every way. Like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, the story is told through interviews and seeing the buildup to the big event, then one finally sees most of the event itself. Mr. Otter, who has done community theatre, says it's right on the money, and that the people in this movie are (frighteningly enough) way better than the group he used to belong to... The nice thing about Guest's movies is that although funny and scathingly accurate, they nevertheless show how much the wacky people involved in (in this case) community theatre love it and enjoy it...they're wierd, but they're doing something they care about, and that's great to see. Buy it, rent it, don't miss it, it's hilarious. |
