A bunch of immortals are duking it out throughout eternity...or at least human history...

I was visiting the Dog Master and the Barracuda. I had brought Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog for them to see, and of course as always I referred to Neal Patrick Harris as 'that brain guy from Starship Troopers'. Which of course meant that we had to WATCH Starship Troopers again, and as always loved it. Except for the Barracuda, who doesn't get it and fell asleep with the dogs. And while watching it, the Dog Master mentioned that Clancy Brown (Sgt. Zim in the movie) was also in Highlander.

I've never seen it, I said.

SHOCK! HORROR! CONSTERNATION! DISBELIEF! from both of the other humans in the room (the dogs really didn't care one way or the other, as long as the petting didn't stop...)

So after the outburst, I said, no, I've heard about it often but never seen it. So of course we watched that next.

And, well. Yes, Serious Honey Sean Connery is at his serious honey best, although not in the film for very long. Yes, there's some good special effects, for the time. Yes, the story is mildly interesting, although there are too many reasons for things that are just left unexplained.

But (as the Dog Master claimed it was for him) in my top ten SF movies ever? no, I don't think so. It was fun, and I'm glad I've seen it, but it really didn't grab me.

And the lead was played by Christopher Lambert, who sent chills of bad vibes up my spine every time I saw his almost expressionless face. Why? I didn't know until I looked him up on IMDB. He played Tarzan in that horrific travesty of a movie Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan (the one with Bo Derek that we've all been trying to pretend never happened). TWENTY FIVE YEARS LATER I still loathe the man because of that movie.

On the other hand, Clancy Brown was indeed a rare treat, as an evil punk immortal who is out to kill all the other immortals. He's extremely e-vile (as we say chez Otter) and has a WONDERFUL time with the role- he was truly a joy to watch.

Once.
