From the short story Eisenheim the Illusionist by Steve Millhauser
A stage magician in turn-of-the-century Vienna finds-and loses- the woman he's been in love with since childhood... What a gem of a movie. This was such a joy to watch: beautiful settings, lovely camerawork, nice attention to detail. The film is short, 98 minutes or so, and every minute counts. It's nice to see a story told well without being padded to make it longer, and it shows that the writers and director knew what they were doing. Bravo! The actors are wonderful, Edward Norton as the magician, and Jessica Biel as the girl he loves. Rufus Sewell (who was GORGEOUS in Dark City) is the dissolute prince here, and plays him to the hilt. The plot is complex and lovely and I can't tell you a thing about it because this movie is just too good to give anything away. Go see it and enjoy it, Otter promises that you will. |
