A traveling show comes to town, and it turns out to be a portal to the place where whatever you want most comes true.

I put this on our netflix queue, and it came...and it sat. And sat. And sat. And our friend Spider Jerusalem said, this was pretty good. So finally we watched it.

Now, I do like a lot of Terry Gilliam's work. I think Time Bandits and Twelve Monkeys are amazingly good, and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen was wonderful. Brazil (which Mr. Otter loves)...not so much, although I appreciate its cynicism and irony.

But I do think Gilliam can be brilliant. And this had JOHNNY DEPP (serious honey) in it, what's not to like?

Well. The slow dull pace, for one. I checked out about twenty minutes into the movie and only kind of half watched it from there.

The fact that although JOHNNY DEPP is listed on the credits, he only shows up briefly (as do Colin Ferrell and Jude Law). And Heath Ledger was an excellent actor, but you do need something to work with, and this wasn't it.

The thing that kind of dragged me back in was Tom Waits as the devil, which was way fun to watch. But not enough to save this movie.

I'm also told that there are many riffs on Waiting for Godot here...well, I really hate that play too, so there you go. This was just strange, and not in a good 'wow that's cool' way.

Sure, rent it, see if you like it...but I sure didn't.

Note from Maid-of-Awesome: The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was in the middle of filming when Heath Ledger died. So a lot of the issues with the film came from the fact that their lead actor DIED in the middle of filming it.

Okay. Still didn't like it. At least it's more understandable why they did it that way.
