What's Otter's
rating system?
Bette Davis plays a spoiled Southern belle whose wilfulness makes her fiancee, Henry Fonda, break off the engagement, even though she really is in love with him.

The story Mr. Otter tells is that when they were going through all the big hoo-ha of casting the role of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind, Bette Davis was a hot contender...when the decision was made not to use her, she was given this role to soften the blow.

Personally, I think this is a MUCH better movie, and Davis came out ahead...sure, GWTW is famous, but it's really not that good...this is a wonderful gem of a movie, and Davis shines in it.

The characterization, the settings, the camerawork, the infamous dress, all are perfect. Fonda and George Brent (and why would ANYONE pick Henry Fonda over hunky George Brent? it's a mystery to me...) are both excellent here, as are the supporting cast.

And Bette Davis. This is one of the best movies she ever made. She expresses so much here with just a look, or the turn of her head...the details of how people live and interact are very good, and the interactions are worth watching.

This is a real winner...if you haven't seen it, go get it, you'll thank me for recommending it.
