Can an incredibly thin, beautiful, funny woman
working at a tv station who's been stomped by a
guy she dated find Mr. Right? Well, duh.
This is a harmless piece of fluff. Everyone in it is just so cute you want to scream, from lying Greg Kinnear to womanizing Hugh Jackman to cute-as-a-little-bunny-in-an-easter-basket Ashley Judd. You almost need a glucose shot with this one, actually, it's way sweet. Anyway. So after Greg Kinnear for some reason treats her like dirt and dumps her and goes back to their boss (why? Ellen Barkin's character is a bitch, 15 years older than Ashley Judd and not nearly as cute) Judd has to find a place to live and (no surprise) ends up moving in with Hugh Jackman and they fall in love. This was obvious in the first five minutes when they were circling around each other making contemptuous remarks, so it's no spoiler, believe me. This film is really really lightweight, trying to sound a little deeper than it is...Judd ends up masquerading as a psychologist and writing a vapid column on men that makes national news, and then has to figure out what to do when her alter ego who doesn't exist becomes a celebrity. Yeah, right. And no, although it makes my younger female friends nuts when I say it, Hugh Jackman is not a honey. VERY VERY easy on the eyes, nice, sweet and adorable, but he has no edge. Even in this movie where he's trying really hard to be a son of a bitch, he's JUST TOO NICE. Astute viewers will recognize the hick farmer in the cow scene as Shuler Hensley, who also appeared in Oklahoma! with Jackman, as Judd Fry. And that's a whole lot better than this, so given a choice in your limited viewing hours, skip this piece of fluff. Unless you're home sick with a cold and your spouse unit wants to be nice to you and rents this movie for you to see...then you better watch it. (Mr. Otter and I have irreconcileable difference about the movies we choose: I'm plot driven, whereas he picks movies because they have people he likes in them. So, of course, invariably, he gets me movies that have people I like but sucky plots, so I don't want to see them...and I get movies that sound interesting to me but he's totally not interested because there's nobody he likes in them...ah well.) Anyway. Lightweight, cute people in it, undemanding. Nuf sed. |
