What's Otter's
rating system?
Who will find the secret of the Lost Skeleton of Cadavra? The Good Scientist? The Bad Scientist and his sidekick Animala? or The Space Aliens? And watch out for...THE MUTANT!!! Aaaaaaggghhh!

This movie is a pretty odd duck indeed...it was made in 2001, but intended as an homage to all those really awful sf movies of the 50s...and they succeed pretty well. It's shot in black and white, with a very short shooting schedule (10 days), a cast mostly made up of the producer's (lead actor/writer/director's) friends and wife, with (intentionally) cheesy special effects...they actually succeeded pretty darn well.

The dialog is wooden, and in the cast interviews in the commentary track they said over and over how hard it was to NOT act, to pretend that they were total unknowns (a la Ed Wood) who thought this was their big break and a really good movie. And it shows.

But you know, there is difference between a cheesy, badly made, low budget movie that is unintentionally funny, and a cheesy, badly made, low budget movie that is TRYING to be all of those things and funny besides...so while it is indeed funny, and fun to watch (mostly because it's a pastiche of every single cliche you can think of in these movies, I kid you not) it's like the difference between seeing a comedian, and laughing because he's funny, and seeing a comedian who is continually telling you how funny he is (see? did you see that? did you see what I did there? that was funny! get it?)

So. Hm. Good, worth watching, funny...but just not the same, a little too self conscious for me. Mr. Otter loved it and laughed his butt off, though, can't wait for the sequel.
