Two Americans in Japan find that they are
equally clueless about Japanese
life and culture and spend the week hanging
out together.
This is undoubtedly the best thing Bill Murray has done in years...I'm a big big fan of his, and keep wanting him to find the right kinds of movies and do well in them...we tried to watch The Razor's Edge but it was just awful, couldn't even get through it...on the other hand, Groundhog's Day was a joy. So anyway. Bill Murray is playing an aging actor who was once famous for action movies, and is now making liquor commercials in Japan...in his hotel, he runs into a woman who is married to a photographer who is out working evey day, and she has nothing to do. Both are bewildered by Japanese life and customs, but want to get out and do things...and they do. And the results are very, very amusing. And charming. I'm afraid of overusing the word charming, but it is so descriptive of this film...plus, many of the scenes are very funny, and it is very interesting to see this 'alien' culture through the eyes of people who have no idea what's going on most of the time. I wished I could understand Japanese, though...I'll bet this movie was a HOOT for those who are bilingual. Anyway. No big denoument, but a good time. |
