A coming-of-age/paean-to-monster-movies set in Key West, Florida during
the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis (October of 1962, for those of use who
are too young to remember it).
Young love and monster movies. It doesn't get any better than that. This is such a wonderful movie. Not only a well-written, charming and funny plot about a couple of pre-teen boys discovering girls. Not only a great slice-of-life of the 1960s, with hippies and suspicion of communists and The Bomb and all the changes that are just starting to take place. But then there's also John Goodman, an Otter Family favorite Actor. Here he's playing a sleazeball producer of low-rent horror movies (Mr. Otter says his character in this movie is modeled on that of William Castle) who is in town to promote his latest movie, which actually stars William Schallart, another Otter Family Favorite Actor. The juxtaposition of the real-life fears of nuclear annihilation during the Missile Crisis, and the theatrical end-of-the-world horror in this schlocky sf film, is absolutely wonderful. All the actors are good, John Goodman shines in this role, and it's funny, heartwarming and thoughtful. See it, buy it, love it. We do. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
