A musical about the California gold rush in 1849.
I really can't believe that I haven't seen this recently enough to have reviewed it, it's a serious Otter Family Favorite. From the irreverent and bawdy storyline, including kidnapping, bigamy, polyandry, theft, drunkenness, whoring and riots, to the songs, most of which will be stuck in your head for days (and this is not a bad thing) to the hilarious scenery-chewing of Lee Marvin, you will love this movie. Sure, it's silly. Some of the best movies are. Sure, it's not actual history. It's more history as it should have been. Sure, it's one of those movies (and I should make a list of these) where people are singing who just shouldn't. Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, to be precise. Marvin is a good enough comic actor to get away with it...during Eastwood's stints, well, you can either just grit your teeth or go get another drink or pet the cats, but it's worth putting up with the bad ones for the overall movie. At least it's not as mind-bendingly awful as hearing The Man of Wood, Pierce Brosnan attempt to make music come out of HIS mouth. Truly, this is a great movie: funny, fast-moving, a great plot and beautiful settings and scenery, you won't want to miss it. And, as Ottersis said to me, one of the best lines ever: Hello, Preacher! Welcome to Hell!
