What's Otter's
rating system?
I saw this when I was a young otter in high school...I must have gone to the theatre at least three times to see it, maybe more; at that time it was one of the BEST MOVIES EVER.

The story is a combination of Faust and Phantom of the Opera, with songwriter Winslow Leach's music stolen by megaproducer Swan to open his new rock palace, which Winslow, madly in love with Phoenix, lead singer, haunts after selling his soul to the devil for his music

Well, a quarter of a century has flowed over both me and this flick, and I'm not that young an otter any more; I find it a little dated now, esp. the Paul Williams soundtrack (much as I do like Mr. Williams' music, he is firmly mired in the 1970s.) The inevitable comparisons with the Rocky Horror Show (which was already a hit in London when this movie was made) can't be avoided...and Rocky Horror is a much better movie on every level.

Still, take it for what it is: a bit of fun with some nice songs, Jessica Harper as cute as a little puppy, and a few good lines, not a bad way to spend an evening.

Brian De Palma wrote and directed this movie, by the way, for those of you who are interested.
