The first of the fabled Hope and Crosby series. In
this first one, they are
two sailors trying to escape clinging women by
going to sea. No, wait,
that's the second...or is it the third? OK, you
probably get my drift
here... I had seen bits of this on television as a young otter, but never sat down and watched the whole thing...but this one is a pip. Hope and Crosby are just unbelieveably young (they were both 37 in 1940, having actually been born in the same month, May of 1903...) and funny and charming. Dorothy Lamour is a looker, and (added bonus) the semi-bad-guy is played by a VERY young and handsome Anthony Quinn. Sure, the story is silly and unbelieveable, with Crosby being a society playboy who just doesn't give a darn about money, and Hope a womanizer who is running away from a shotgun wedding, and all the complications that ensue when they meet Lamour...but it's still fun, and there are some swell song and dance numbers too, especially when the boys get warmed up. You may remember some of the later Road pics being real stinkeroos, but forget that, this one is good, very enjoyable and fresh, even 60 years later. |
