This is one of the complete series of
Shakespeare plays that the BBC
and Jonathan Miller did in the late 70s and
early 80s...it's one of the
few I missed when they were first shown, and
I've been trying to get
ahold of it ever since...and it was worth
the wait.
This production was shot in a Southern
California high school, has
minimal sets, and is as low key as this play
can get...which makes
the characters stand out all the more. And
of course, the reason
I've been wanting to see it for so long:
John Cleese plays Petruchio.
And you know, he does a DARN good job of it!
Very believeable, very
funny, very convincing. The rest of the cast
is good, esp.
Katherine...for all of its lack of
production values, this one is well
worth tracking down.
