This was actually better than we expected. This (according to Mr. Otter) was the movie that made both Cagney and Robinson stars, and you can see why: Cagney is charming and tough, and Robinson is cocky and mouthy to the max.

Robinson parlays a talent for gambling into an empire, and the police find him a thorn in their side and are doing their best to take him down. Cagney is his right-hand man, and holds his own on-screen.

I have to say, I did have trouble telling the blondes apart, they all looked alike to me...but I think that was part of the point.

This is a wonderful period piece, even though we must all be made to see that Crime Does Not Pay.
