It's a pirate movie, okay? lots of swash and buckle, some witty repartee,
they take out the bad guys and sail away.
I've loved this one since I was a young otter and saw it in the theatre, I
think my buddies and I went several times because we were so amused by
it...ah, the summer I graduated from high school, what a golden time that
was...!
But I digress.
This is a great movie in so many ways...let me count them:
- Robert Shaw, swashing his buckle. Yes, he was kinda long in the tooth,
but DAMN he made a great pirate...
- James Earl Jones, almost as long in the ol' tooth department, but
looking DAMN FINE as well, with his lovely voice...a very nice pairing.
- Genevieve Bujold, again LITT (well, 33, kinda old by ingenue girl
standards) but again, damn fine looking
- Beau Bridges. Avery Schrieber. Peter Boyle. Anjelica Huston (who never
says a word).
- Geoffrey Holder (for those of you old enough to remember the Uncola
Man). And the KNIVES, love that whole thing!
- Tom Clancy. Yes, that Tom Clancy. He sings in the
background all the way through, and other groups of people sing sea
chanteys, and if you know the Clancys, you'll recognize every one of them. A
very nice touch.
- A very funny and silly script, with many naughty limericks.
- The costumes, which are WAY over the top. Not to mention the tub scene,
with the ships. Or the fingernails...
- The score, which is remarkably lighthearted for a movie where people are
fighting and getting killed (although not nearly as many as in a modern
movie, of course).
Well, I could go on and on, but I won't. This movie is wonderful, it was a
perfect choice for September 19 (International Talk Like A Pirate Day) and
we enjoyed it once again. And you will too, on whatever day you choose to
watch it. Soon, I hope.
