A kid is taken on an adventure through time by a band of very bad thieves who have the Map of the Universe...and are using it to get rich.

Oh, this movie is a treat. An Otter Family Favorite, full of good stuff, kind of odd, but really really wonderful...in fact, I had to check three times to make sure I hadn't already reviewed it, I was so sure I had watched it recently and written it up...but no.

So here we go...

This is one of Terry Gilliam's best. He has done so many odd and wonderful movies, like Twelve Monkeys and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Fisher King...and even when his work is not a fav, as in Brazil and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it's worth seeing. He is amazing. And this movie, one of his first after going off on his own from the Pythons (and many Pythons are in it, anyway) is absolutely, completely, incredibly wonderful.

The boy (David Warnock) is good, very believeable, and his interaction with the Bandits is really great...they're clueless, but you get to liking them, and each does have his own personality, which is hard to do with eight people in a two hour movie, especially with things moving as fast as they do in this flick.

Sean Connery as Agamemnon. Rowf. Hold me down, he's a serious honey in this, and in a short tunic, oh yes. And all the historical periods they visit are well chosen, with quirks of their own, not quite as the history books record them. Evil is really really evil, as well as funny, and there are so many good lines in this movie that we chez Otter quote to each other all the time: "I'm the Supreme Being. I am not entirely dim." and "Don't touch that! It's EVIL!" are just two...

And there are so many small brilliant touches in every scene, many of which are almost hidden...you have to see it over and over to get them all, and I'm still noticing things I've missed, after many viewings.

Anyway. I don't want to describe too much of this, because if you've seen it, you love it, and I'm wasting my time...and if you haven't seen it, I don't want to spoil the fun. Get your hands on it and enjoy it...and if you hadn't seen it before, you can thank The Otter.
