From the novel of the same name by H. G. Wells
Another remake of the story about a guy who invents a you-know-what and goes ahead 800K years and finds stuff. You know. A little different from the 1960 version, a little more plot, a few more special effects. This time he's trying to restore his fiancee to life, finds out that he can't change the past, and goes into the future to find answers. Not having read the book (and I blush to admit it, ok?) I don't know how closely this sticks to it...but it's pretty darn dull. Guy Pearce is just way too skinny, that boy should eat something and get bigger and stronger before he tries to do anything hard like being in a movie again! The plot was slow and predictable, although the special effects, esp. of the world changing around him, were very good. And Jeremy Irons was e-vile, as we say chez otter, although his part was short. But the best part, and the only thing in this movie worth seeing other than the time travel f/x, was Orlando Jones as the virtual librarian, what a treat! the bit of Webber musical takeoff has us chuckling on our futon, and that was about the only amusement in a 90 minute flick. I'm just thanking my lucky stars that my buddy Virago didn't manage to drag me to the theatre for this one, it's definitely not worth 9 bucks. Rent it if you absolutely must see it, and you really only have to pay attention to a couple of parts, the rest is silliness. |
