From the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore.
Revenge and rebellion in a future fascist Britain, incited by the mysterious V. Mr. Otter and I went to see this movie, both of us very excited...and really, overall, it's a good effort. There are excellent actors: Hugo Weaving (whom you never see, but his voice is very distinctive) plays the eponymous V. Natalie Portman is Evie, his protege, and is not only amazingly beautiful, even with her head shaved, but is a wonderful actress. Stephen Fry (an Otter Family Favorite) is also here, briefly. And if you haven't read the book, you'll probably like this movie. But I can see why Moore was upset about it; personally, I think saying, "nope, they got it wrong" loudly and publicly is enough, no point doing something as flamboyant as taking your name off the finished product (as if nobody would know who wrote the original) but he's a flamboyant kind of guy, and can certainly afford a grand gesture now and again. This is one of the few cases where if you haven't read the book, you should see the movie first. Go see it, it's good in many ways. And then read the book and find out how much they got wrong, and how completely wonderful the original book is, and buy it, and read it over and over and over...you'll be glad you did. |
