A short Disney animated feature film about...guess what?
It was New Year's Day, and several of us were there for the traditional Videofest. We had had Hoppin' John and corn muffins for breakfast, and at 10 am we drew the name of the first movie from the bowl: this one. Ottersis said, when it started, I've seen this! because the first twenty minutes is an amusing cartoon history of flight, from the Wright Brothers up to modern times (which in this case is 1943), which had been on the Disney channel many times. Then we go to the second part, narrated by Alexander De Seversky (famous aviator and aircraft designer, evidently. Mr. Otter, Ottersis and Spider Jerusalem all recognized him.) So anyway. This whole movie, aside from the amusing part in the beginning, is a propaganda piece showing how necessary it was to seperate the Army Air Corps from the Army and create a seperate air force, with frequent reference to Famous Flying Legend Billy Mitchell (and reverently displayed photos of him). That was it. A whole lot of maps, diagrams and animation and a lot of boom and whango for this one purpose. An interesting period piece, but, as Mr. Otter has just informed me, the Air Force was not created until September 20, 1947. Yes, he remembered the exact date (it has correlation to his birth date, not to give away any of his secrets...) So a little before its time, but as I said, interesting. |
