The intertwined lives of London society in 1870.

Mr. Otter found this set of dvds (a four-part miniseries) at his library and brought them home...I was home with a cold and wasn't in the mood, but kept hearing and seeing bits and it looked really good. So I bought it on Amazon, and we saved it til we were both home, which happened to be when we both got sick again...shows you how busy life is.

And again it was excellent. The story follows three or four familes, and is about A) how different life is from the old days, and B) a ruthless banker-guy and his scam that (and you know this is going to happen from the beginning) blows up in everyone's face.

The period details are lovely, the actors are good, the costumes and sets are wonderful, and the story is excellent and sticks very closely to the book, which I read after not watching the movie last time. The characters' relationships, lives and loves will have you glued to the tv. Well worth seeing.

And I have to say, it's amazingly appropriate to our current times. Because in one scene, I pointed to the banker and turned to Mr. Otter and said, he's Madoff. Exactly, said Mr. Otter. Plus ça change, plus c'est la meme chose...
